Parents:

We are currently building simple rockets in class to see how mass and force affect the acceleration of our rockets.  Some students will also be able to manipulate the structure of the fuel to test its effect on acceleration.  Students will explain this activity and the changes we saw with different variables using Newton’s three laws.   I would like to conclude our rocket building with the viewing of October Sky in class, unfortunately, we will not be able to use the class time.  Instead, I will be hosting the movie after school on Thursday, November 10.  (Depending on the number who stay to watch the movie, we will either watch it in my room or the auditorium.)

October Sky is based on the auto-biographical novel Rocket Boys written by Homer Hickam, a former NASA scientist.  This movie is rated PG so your child will need your permission to view it.  If you would like to learn more about Homer Hickam, you can visit www.homerhickam.com.   The quote below from Universal Studios outlines the plot:

“In Coalwood , West Virginia , 1957, coal mining is king and no one can escape life underground. But when high schooler Homer Hickam, Jr. sees the Soviet satellite Sputnik streak overhead, he aims for the stars and a new destiny in this incredible true story of hope, determination and triumph. With the help of his teacher and three buddies, Homer sets out to build his own rocket. How Homer overcomes seemingly impossible obstacles - poor education, a disapproving father and a series of misfires that threaten to flatten his dreams and the town - and fulfills his vision is the launching pad for one of the most timeless, inspirational stories ever brought to the screen.”

The film spends a good deal of time on the trial and error necessary for discovery science, and students will have the opportunity to look for examples of Newton’s laws in action as we view the film.

Thank you in advance for your support.
