Please complete today's agenda in order.
2nd Quarter Drop Request - I was glad to see that many more of you took advantage of the drop request this quarter than did in first quarter. Good for you! It was absolutely nonsensical to not use this opportunity. I will be working my way through your requests throughout this week They will all be finished by Tuesday, 1/10.
Today's Goals:
Review earthquakes and earth's structure.
Begin volcano and topography notes.
Before moving on, did you record tonight's homework? UNFINISHED class work must be finished for homework!
1. Review. Our study of waves, earth's structure, and earthquakes is the foundation for our next sub-unit. To refresh your memory, today you will start by using BrainPop to review.
a. Open your notebook to your notes from last unit. As you work through these instructions, ADD anything new that you learn.
b. For BOTH BrainPop titles that you are required to do, Earth's Structure and Earthquakes, you are ALSO to read through the Q & A (shown in orange below) sections and the FYI sections.

Each FYI section has four or five icons (see below). Each icon has material for you to read/work through.

c. After you have completed the movies, and all of the FYI and Q&A sections of BOTH titles, you will take a review quiz. The quiz will include questions that came from the Q & A and the FYI, not just the movie. (This is your first grade for third quarter!) You may use your notebook to take the review quiz.
6th period only: When you finish the BrainPops, please bring the headphones up to the SmartBoard. Put your pair inside a bubble-wrap bag, and then put the bag in the pink bucket.
2. Intro to our new topics - volcanoes and topography
a. Read this page, and then click "More about Judging Hazards" at the bottom to continue reading. In your notebook, create a new page titled "volcanoes" and list six products of a volcano that are hazardous. What is a lahar?
b. Topography is a type of mapping that allows us to "see" three dimensions on a two dimensional surface, like a paper map or a computer screen. This is done using something called "contour lines," which you will learn all about next week with Mr. Marialke, but it is also occasionally done using color. Use this website to identify the three items below. (Be sure to rotate the Earth by using the pull-down menu to change the view.) Put these on a new page titled "Topography using color."
i. two very low lying areas (low elevations) on the globe. Give the name and elevations.
ii. two very high elevation areas on the globe. Give the name and elevations.
iii. How did you determine that these areas were either high or low elevations?
3. Who would you pick for Teacher of the Year? If you do not have time to do this in class, you can still access it while at home.
