Caption: Brain waves during sleep. Electroencephalogram (EEG) of a person during the inactive phase of sleep (left, blue) then at the beginning of the active phase (right, pink) as the person begins to wake. This active phase is marked by increased electrical activity in the brain, shown by the appearance of the brain waves at right. An EEG measures the electrical activity of the brain (brain waves) using electrodes attached to the scalp. The arrangement of these electrodes is shown at far left, on diagrams of the head seen from above. The central line is from an electrode placed on the back of the head.
